Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be a stressful process. The paperwork, review and waiting period are all nerve-wracking, and it is especially difficult to handle when your livelihood and well-being are on the line. Ideally, you will receive an approval for your SSDI application the first time you apply, but this is not the case for many disabled people. The Social Security Administration may deny you benefits—more than once, even, if you choose to reapply.
According to the SSA, between 2006 and 2015, the average rate of denied disability claims was 62 percent. If yours is one of these, the good news is that you can typically reapply or appeal your denial. You should first be aware, however, of the reasons you might have received a denial.
1. Insufficient medical evidence
The SSA typically awards SSD benefits to disabled individuals who are low-income or unable to work. Workers of any age may apply and receive benefits, but you must have proof of your medical condition in question in order to do so. If you have insufficient medical evidence of your disability, you are unlikely to receive an approval when you apply for SSD benefits. It is important to submit all documentation of your ailment.
2. Failure to cooperate or follow treatment
When you do submit your medical records proving your disability, they will be subject to consideration by SSA. They will evaluate whether you have followed your doctor’s prescribed treatment and cooperated with their advice. If you have not done either of these, you might find that this hurts your case and leads to a denied application.
3. Denial on previous application
Too many people mistakenly file a new SSD claim when theirs is denied rather than simply appealing their original request. In some cases, doing this will result in an automatic denial, and you will find yourself at ground zero again.
