3 common injuries for workers’ comp claims

Sustaining an injury at work is a stressful and painful experience. In addition to the physical pain you are likely combatting, you are probably worried about the future of your job and the stability of your finances. This is why employers carry workers’ compensation insurance; when employees such as yourself are injured and cannot work, they should be protected from potential consequences. 

According to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, workers’ comp provides medical care, temporary disability benefits and potential replenishment of wages if you are losing income because of the injury. The following are three of the most common injuries that may lead you to file such a claim. 

1. Strains and sprains

Strains and sprains may seem relatively minor, but if left untreated, these injuries can result in permanent damage and serious pain. This injury happens due to stretching and tearing of ligaments in your body. This might also affect the muscles and tendons in your body. Common areas for this to happen include ankles, the back and thighs. Doctors can usually treat this injury easily, but it can prevent you from working while you recuperate. 

2. Contusions

Contusions, much like sprains and strains, are easily treated but potentially serious. This injury refers to bruising of the skin or tissue which results in the rupture of blood capillaries. Muscle contusions are somewhat more complicated, though, as they can cause internal swelling and make it difficult to move the adjacent joints. In more serious cases, it can escalate into a hematoma, which is a pool of blood within the injured tissue.

3. Overexertion

Overexertion injuries are particularly common in positions that require repetitive movement or heavy lifting. If you type, for example, the muscles in your hand might become overexerted to the point of becoming painful. Similarly, if you lift a heavy object, you may overexert your back or legs. This injury can seriously harm your muscles and make it difficult to continue working as you usually would.
